Efthyvoulos Kyriacou

Assis. Professor
Efthyvoulos Kyriacou is an Assist. Professor at the Dept. of Electrical, Computer Engineering and Informatics, at CUT and Head of the University’s eHealth Laboratory. He received diploma and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University in Athens Greece, in 1996 and 2000, respectively. He has more than 20 years of experience in ehealth systems, emergency telemedicine systems, medical imaging systems and intelligent systems applications in medicine. He has published 45 refereed journal, 105 conference papers, 24 invited book chapters and has one patent in these areas (Citation: 5311, h-index: 35, i10-index: 85, at Google Scholar). He has been involved in numerous projects in these areas funded by EU, the National Research Foundation of Cyprus, the INTERREG and other bodies. He was Guest Co-Editor of 7 Special Issues. He is a co-editor of the book Ultrasound and Carotid Bifurcation Atherosclerosis, Springer, UK 2012 (66K downloads Bookmetrix Sept. 2021). Moreover, he serves as an Associate Editor of Elsevier-Journal Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine. He served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Trans. on Information Technology in Biomedicine from 2007 to 2010, he serves as a reviewer in many journals related to his research fields. He was the Program Co-chair of ITAB 2009, BIBE 2012, Medicon 2016, Melecon 2016 and was in the program committee of several other scientific conferences. He is an IEEE Senior Member and one of the main founders and first chairman (8/2008-1/2019) of the IEEE Cyprus Engin. in Medicine and Biology/Signal Processing chapter.
Christos Loizou

Christos Loizou

Adjunct Professor
Christos P. Loizou (Ph.D., M.Sc., B.Sc.) is an adjunct Professor at the Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Informatics, at Cyprus University of Technology. He has more than 25 years of experience in medical imaging and video analysis and processing. He has been involved in different projects in the above area funded by the research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus the EU and the National Institutes of Health (NIH-USA), with a total funding in the range of 9,5 million Euros. He has published 27 journal publications, 61 conference papers, 5 books, and 11 chapters in books in these areas (3736 citations, h-index 30, i-10 index 63). He was a supervisor of a number of Ph.D. (5), M.Sc. (19) and B.Sc. (65) students in computer image, video analysis and telemedicine. His research interests include medical imaging, video analysis and processing; motion analysis; signal processing; pattern recognition; voice stress signal analysis; biosignal analysis in ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging and video and computer applications in medicine. He has extensive experience in image/video pre-processing, despeckling, segmentation and texture analysis. Dr. Loizou is a Senior IEEE Member, and serves as a reviewer in many IEEE Transactions journals and as a chair or co-chair in many IEEE conferences. He is also an Associate Researcher at the Institute of Neurology and Genetics, Nicosia, Cyprus and a co-founder and member of the e-Health Laboratory of the University of Cyprus.

Michalis Gemenaris, MSc

PhD Student | Research Associate

Michalis is currently a Research Associate for our AtheroRisk Project, in the Dept. of Electrical Eng. and Computer Engin. and Informatics and is supervised by the Assis. Professor Efthyvoulos Kyriacou. Michalis holds a BSc in Computer Engin., from the Frederick University (Cyprus). In his Senior Project, he presented an innovative idea for Hardware Optimization of ANN Sigmoid Activation Functions on FPGAs. His scientific paper “High-Performance and Low-Cost Approximation of ANN Sigmoid Activation Functions on FPGAs” was submitted to the 12th International Conference on Modern Circuits and Systems Technologies (MOCAST 2023) on Electronics and Communications that will take place in June 2023 (Athens, Greece). Michalis is highly skilled in mobile and computer application development, using different programming languages, and has experience in both front-end and back-end solutions.

Stelios Mappouras, MSc

PhD Student | Research Associate

Stelios holds an MSc in Data Science and Engineering and a BSc in Computer Engineering and Informatics from the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT). Currently, he is a PhD candidate in the department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Informatics at CUT. He is a member of the eHealthLab since 2023 and his primary research focus encompasses the areas of Software Engineering (Web, Mobile, Desktop Applications), Blockchain Technology and Decentralized Applications, Digital Twins and Serious Games, as well as Smart Data Processing applications in the sector of health. Additionally, he is engaged in the planning and implementation of European projects currently managed by the laboratory.

Georgia D Liapi, MSc

PhD Candidate

Georgia has been a member of the ehealthlab@CUT since 2022. She is currently a PhD candidate (supervised by Dr E. Kyriacou), at the Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Informatics, at CUT. Her PhD topic is on the analysis of carotid plaque motion in ultrasound videos, for the identification of high-risk plaques. Among others, she possesses skills in medical image and video processing and analysis, in deep learning for image segmentation and classification, and in statistical analysis. She holds an MSc in Systems Biology, from Maastricht University, and a BSc in Chemistry (focused on Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), from University of Patras. She is interested in disease mechanisms, in atherosclerosis and cancer, and in AI applications for diagnosis and assessment of disease progression. Georgia has >6 years experience in Python, and since 2022, she has been advancing in software development, starting from desktop applications, with a focus on medical imaging and diagnosis software, and the associated regulations, and security priorities.

Christodoulos C. Yiannakou

PhD Student

Christodoulos is a Computer Eng. Instructor (Dept. of Secondary Technical, Vocational Education and Training, Cyprus Ministry of Education and Youth). In his PhD he is developing an automated system to predict developmental language disorders (DLD) in adolescents and children. He holds a BSc in Electronics and Computer Engin. (Technical University of Crete, Greece). There, he designed and simulated the main datapath of 5 stages pipelined RISC microprocessor (DLX), in SystemC, a super class of C++ language. The SystemC design is translated into RTL VHDL, using a compiler named SystemCrafter 2.0. Using Xilinx place and route tools, the design is downloaded into a Xilinx Spartan-3 FPGA. The design functionality it is verified, using MEMEC development board (supervised by Dionysios Pnevmatikatos, Assist. Prof. at the Electronics and Computer Engin. Department). He is highly skilled in web and computer application development and has working experience in front-end and back-end solutions. He holds professional certifications like ISACA CISA, CISCO CCNA, AVAYA ACS, AVAYA ACIS, TIA CTP 2007, Digium DCAA.

Ioanna Valiandi, MSc

PhD Student | Research Associate

Ioanna Valiandi holds an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the Cyprus University of Technology and a BSc in Computer Science with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Cyprus. Currently, she is a PhD student in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Informatics at CUT. From 2020 to 2021, she worked as a Special Scientist at UCY. Since 2022, she has been a Research Associate at the CYENS Centre of Excellence, in the VIDEOMICS group, which focuses on Adaptive Video Processing and Delivery for Real-Time Applications. Her research interests include video coding and processing, adaptive video delivery for real-time applications and 360o video coding. She aims to advance her work in AI-based coding techniques and neural video encoding. More broadly, her research covers video codec comparison, adaptive video streaming, video quality assessment and user Quality of Experience, leveraging extensive medical and general-purpose databases, including 360o video.

Dimitris Vrachnos, MSc

PhD Student | Bioinformatician

Dimitris is a bioinformatician specialized in multi-omics data analysis. He holds a BSc in Biology and an MSc in Biomedical Engineering (University of Hull), and a specialized MSc in Omics Data Analysis (University of Vic, Spain). As a key member of Stremble's bioinformatics and computational biology team, he analyses and interprets large-scale data from diverse 'omics' fields—including genomics, transcriptomics, and metagenomics. His role is central to the Horizon 2020 Cardiocare project, a multi-disciplinary study on breast cancer therapy-induced cardiotoxicity. His industrial PhD links directly to the Horizon Europe Comfortage project, a multi-country initiative focused on personalized prevention for dementia and frailty, where Stremble and CUT collaborate. This position allows him to blend his deep analytical skills with high-level project oversight, translating complex biological data into meaningful insights for pressing health challenges. He is expert in high-impact translational research, highlighted by his contribution to the Myeloma-Risk project. This prestigious European Research Council Proof-of-Concept grant, in partnership with the University of Milan, aims to develop a novel diagnostic tool for high-risk smoldering myeloma. His role is key to this, involving the advanced bioinformatic analysis of mutational signatures and supporting the development of the IPR and commercialization strategy to bring the tool to market. He has led the analytics for the Cyprus Genome Project, a major initiative establishing a large-scale genetic variant database for the Cypriot population, and headed the multi-omics analysis for the Molecular Colonoscopy (MOCO) project, which developed new risk-assessment tools for colorectal cancer. Looking ahead, Dimitris is focusing his PhD research on innovating at the intersection of computational biology and AI. His primary interests include researching novel models for Digital Twins and developing new AI-based solutions to address classic statistical challenges in multi-omics analysis.

Demetris Kaolis, MSc

Physicist | PhD Candidate

Demetris holds a BSc in Physics (from University of Thessaloniki, 2005) and completed his MSc in Medical Physics (2006, University of Surrey). Since January 2024, he has been serving as Chief Coordinator of Medical Physics Services (PACS) at the State Health Services Organisation. He has held positions at the Ministry of Health and Nicosia General Hospital, with pivotal role in developing and administrating the award-winning Public Hospitals PACS network in Cyprus. His work on the National PACS system was recognized with the Silver Award in the Quality of Services Category in 2020 (CY Healthcare Business Awards). He has extensive experience in medical physics services for Nuclear Medicine and Radiology departments, and has been instrumental in establishing compliance-testing programs for medical imaging equipment. He has been involved in major healthcare infrastructure projects exceeding €50M in total value, including the acquisition of advanced medical imaging systems (CT, MRI, BIPLANE XA, US, DX, SPECT-CT), PACS software and hardware, and the implementation of Radiology Information Systems across public hospitals. Since 2016, he has been serving as a Visiting Professor at European University Cyprus, teaching Digital Medical Imaging and Medical Information Technology. In 2024, he was nominated as a Medical Physics Expert and Radiation Protection Expert in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology and Nuclear Medicine.

Christina Hadjilouca

Cardiologist | Phd Candidate

Christina graduated from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) in 2004. She has been specialized in Cardiology, at Nicosia General Hospital (2006 to 2012). From 2013 to 2025, she specialized in Intensive Care , at Nicosia General Hospital. Since November 1st 2016, she has been working as an Intensivist at the Intensive Care Clinic of Nicosia General Hospital, while in July 15th 2020, she started her position as Assistant Director, as a Cardiologist/Intensivist. She has a special interest in ultrasound imaging of the critically ill patient and holds the relevant accreditation of the European Society of Intensive Care European Diploma in Advanced Intensive Care Echocardiography (EDEC), since 2023. She is also a member of the ECMO team of Nicosia General Hospital, which has been active since 2020.

Panagiotis D. Papageorgiou

MSc Student | Research Associate

Panagiotis is an MSc student in AI and Data Engineering at Cyprus University of Technology (CUT). He completed his BSc at CUT in Computer Science and Engineering with the highest degree award and has received awards and scholarships like the Huawei Seeds for the Future award. He joined the eHealth Lab in 2025 and his research interests revolve around providing intelligent software engineering solutions in the healthcare domain. He is currently working on an end-to-end system for the annotation and automated segmentation of brain lesions in Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
