This year, the 47th Annual Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society took place in Copenhagen (Denmark), between 14th to 17th of July.
Our lab member, Georgia D. Liapi, participated in the Conference, presenting a recent study of our group, where we examined motion of the atherosclerotic plaque components, in 2D B-mode longitudinal carotid ultrasound videos, to understand which of them may be responsible for the development of discordant motion, a type of movement we have characterized in a previous study to identify plaques in high risk of ischemic stroke (due to rupture).
We rely on the discordant motion, which in fact informs us that different areas inside the examined plaque move to different directions, with varying velocities, as it is a way to detect an increase in plaque’s internal stress (presence of strain).
The study was presented as a Poster, on the 15th of July 2025.
